Movie Monday

Just watched Pan's Labyrinth.

My friend told me it was kind of arty and mystical and fable-y. She told me in a way that did not sound like those were good things, but I watched it anyway because I had heard it was really good.

To me, "really good" means enjoyable, fun to watch, and I will laugh at least once during the movie.

I forget that "really good" to the rest of the world means "makes you think" but what they are really saying is it will depress you and somebody likeable will definitely die but the film will be nominated for an award so it must be "really good."

When will I learn to just stick with romantic comedies and sci-fi?

BTW, if you plan to watch Pan's Labyrinth, be warned it is in Spanish with English subtitles so you have to pay attention throughout the entire movie.

You're welcome.

Miss Marple and Me

I watched the last of my new Miss Marple DVD's tonight. What is it about that old lady that I just cannot get enough of?

I read all of Agatha Christie's books as a girl. Though Poirot is a delight, my favorite has always been Miss Marple. I adored the PBS series starring Joan Hickson in the late 80's / early 90's. Now I am checking out the new series starring Geraldine McEwan, who is quite a bit more spry than Hickson, though equally ancient.

The Hickson series was true to the books but the McEwan stories, well, let us just say they "take liberties." Oh who am I kidding, they completely changed the murderer in "The Body in the Library." Though I did rather enjoy the switcheroo, and Jack Davenport was lovely as one of the bumbling detectives, always one step behind Miss Marple.

If you want to check out the new series but only have time for one show, I recommend "4:50 From Paddington." John Hannah plays the detective (not a bumbling one) and it has additional eye candy in the form of Michael Landes as the token American. Landes was very Cary Grant in this one. He reminded me I am still boy-crazy after all these years. I guess it's nice to know it never goes away.

Sci-Fi Heaven.net has a video of the Star Trek Remastered Trailer, showcasing the digitally remastered effects. Very cool. It says "one week from today" so maybe that's when we plebes will get to see it on TV.

Tom Cruise Is A Weenie

Okay, this is not a subject I would normally spend a lot of time on but my judgement is impaired because I have been sitting at my computer so long my eyes are all gummy and I have lost all feeling in my butt.

So, does anyone else think it's hilarious that Tom Cruise's was dropped by his studio?

BWAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I can honestly say Tom Cruise has always given me the creeps. Since 1981, anyway, when I first spotted him in a little film called Taps. Granted, his character was totally creepy but I'm sure it was my finely tuned real-life Creep-O-Meter that put me onto him so quickly.

Although I must admit it wasn't an entirely reliable method of detection. I was all agog for another unknown actor in that movie who seemed so pure and good and noble but who grew up to be the human formerly known as Sean Penn.

Alas, a tiny piece of my heart still belongs to pre-heroin Sean. And young, skinny Elvis. And pre-Passion Mel. But once they go to drugs or alcohol or god or any dangerous combination thereof, I'm pretty much done with them.

Thank god Hollywood provides us with a constant parade of new and pretty boys every year so we never have a chance to get bored. (Or girls, if that is your persuasion. I am all for equal opportunity.)
