I watched the last of my new Miss Marple DVD's tonight. What is it about that old lady that I just cannot get enough of?
I read all of Agatha Christie's books as a girl. Though Poirot is a delight, my favorite has always been Miss Marple. I adored the PBS series starring Joan Hickson in the late 80's / early 90's. Now I am checking out the new series starring Geraldine McEwan, who is quite a bit more spry than Hickson, though equally ancient.
The Hickson series was true to the books but the McEwan stories, well, let us just say they "take liberties." Oh who am I kidding, they completely changed the murderer in "The Body in the Library." Though I did rather enjoy the switcheroo, and Jack Davenport was lovely as one of the bumbling detectives, always one step behind Miss Marple.
If you want to check out the new series but only have time for one show, I recommend "4:50 From Paddington." John Hannah plays the detective (not a bumbling one) and it has additional eye candy in the form of Michael Landes as the token American. Landes was very Cary Grant in this one. He reminded me I am still boy-crazy after all these years. I guess it's nice to know it never goes away.
